Gachagua Promises Big January Announcement That Could Shake Mt. Kenya Politics
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has set the stage for a highly anticipated political showdown, promising to unveil a major announcement in January 2025.
Speaking at AIPCA Kangari Church in Murang’a County on Sunday, November 24, Gachagua hinted at a significant political movement that could redefine Mt. Kenya politics.
“This January, I will tell you what we have agreed, and it is good that I have said my friend, the President, did well in bringing on this political fight with the people of the mountain as we have now known him,” Gachagua remarked.
The embattled former deputy leader, who was impeached earlier this year, expressed confidence that his announcement would ripple across Kenya’s political landscape.
He compared the forthcoming movement to the historic 2002 Mt. Kenya political shift, declaring, “Next year, the political movement that will come out of Mt. Kenya region will make the 2002 movement look like a joke.”
Gachagua credited Mt. Kenya lawmakers for their steadfast support during his impeachment ordeal. “The MPs who stood with me did so for the greater good of our region. They refused to be intimidated into joining political fights,” he noted, praising their resilience.
The former DP revealed he is engaging a diverse coalition of stakeholders—including church leaders, business figures, and professionals—to chart a course for his next political chapter. “We are talking with our church leaders, business people, professionals, and all the brained leaders who love our people,” he said.
Observers speculate Gachagua’s announcement could trigger a rift with President William Ruto. He criticized Ruto’s alleged duplicity, stating, “We initially talked to you when you had a Bible, and we did not understand you well then. Now we have read and understood you.”
While some doubt Gachagua’s ability to stage a political comeback, constitutional ambiguities leave room for maneuver. Previous rulings, such as the Court of Appeal’s decision on Governor Ferdinand Waititu’s impeachment, suggest that an impeached leader may still vie for office unless barred by moral or legal grounds.
All eyes are now on January, with analysts anticipating a seismic political declaration.
