Gachagua Pressures Ruto Over Delay in Electoral Body’s Reconstitution
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised concerns about the government’s delay in establishing a new electoral commission and urged President William Ruto to act swiftly.
Speaking during a church service at P.C.E.A Mwiki in Kasarani, Nairobi, on Sunday, December 8, Gachagua emphasized the importance of having a functioning Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) well in advance of the next general election.
“An election is only as credible as its process,” he stated. “The electoral commission must be in place three years before the election. We now have two and a half years remaining, and there is no IEBC. People can sense mischief.”
Gachagua stressed that the timeline for reconstituting the IEBC was already behind schedule. He urged President Ruto to prioritize this matter to ensure a credible electoral process.
“We are thus calling on the reconstitution of IEBC urgently so that the process can be as credible as the expected outcome,” he added.
His remarks came as Kenyans launched an online campaign under the hashtag #appointiebcnow, demanding immediate action from the government to establish the electoral body. Many accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of stalling the process, calling it a deliberate delay.
The delay in setting up the IEBC has been attributed to ongoing court cases challenging the appointment of a panel responsible for selecting the commission’s members. January has been identified as the earliest the process could begin, further amplifying public frustration.
At the same church service, Gachagua thanked those who have consistently held the government accountable and called on the church to continue speaking out against wrongdoing in leadership. This event marked Gachagua’s first public appearance after a turbulent week where he alleged a planned attempt on his life during a burial in Limuru.
