Gachagua Blames Adani Deal for Rift with President Ruto, Urges Reconciliation
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has opened up about the strained relationship between him and President William Ruto, attributing it to a disagreement over controversial deals involving the Adani Group.
Speaking during a church service in Kigumo, Murang’a County, on Sunday, November 24, Gachagua claimed that his opposition to the deals led to his fallout with the Head of State.
Gachagua revealed that he was the lone voice of dissent in the Cabinet, warning the president about what he termed “shady dealings” with the Indian conglomerate. “The matter with Adani is what led to my fallout with the president. Because in the Cabinet, I was the only person who could tell him the truth. All the others were cowards,” Gachagua stated.
The former deputy president alleged that his concerns were dismissed, and he was accused of opposing government projects.
He urged the president to reconsider his approach, drawing from the Bible. “I told him the issue with Adani is shady, and the people don’t want it. He hated me. It was said I’m opposing government projects. I would like to ask the president to take time to read the book of John 8:31. Let him agree to listen to the people of Kenya,” Gachagua pleaded.
Gachagua also criticized the president’s eventual decision to cancel the Adani deals, claiming it was not motivated by genuine intentions. Instead, he argued that the move was influenced by the indictment of Adani Group’s founder in the United States.
“Even after the president cancelled the deals, there was no need to clap for him because it did not come from his heart. He only responded after that suspect was indicted in the United States,” Gachagua remarked.
President Ruto, while announcing the cancellation last Thursday, defended his decision, stating it was based on credible information. “I have stated in the past, and I reiterate today, that in the face of undisputed evidence or credible information on corruption, I will not hesitate to take decisive action,” the president affirmed.
