Gachagua Addresses Kenyans from Hospital Following Impeachment

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken publicly for the first time since his impeachment, addressing Kenyans as he remains hospitalized. Gachagua, who is admitted at The Karen Hospital, was removed from office following a Senate vote that found him guilty of multiple charges of gross misconduct.

The impeachment, which came after a late-night session, saw 56 senators vote to oust him, marking a significant moment in Kenya’s political landscape.

Though Gachagua had remained silent since the impeachment, he broke his silence on Sunday, October 20, by taking to social media to wish the nation well on the occasion of Mashujaa Day, a holiday dedicated to honoring Kenya’s heroes. His message was brief yet poignant: “Happy Mashujaa Day dear Kenyans. God Bless our Nation,” the embattled leader wrote, choosing to focus on a note of unity and patriotism amid the ongoing political turmoil.

Gachagua’s impeachment was based on five major charges, with the most serious being gross violations of Kenya’s Constitution. The first charge cited breaches of Articles 10 (2)(A), (B), and (C), along with Articles 27 (4), 73 (1)(A), 73 (2)(B), 75 (1)(C), and 129 (2). In total, 54 senators voted in favor of this charge. Another significant accusation, which garnered 51 votes in favor, was a violation of Article 160 (1), which concerns the independence of judges.

As the political dust settles, President William Ruto was seen in Kwale, leading the 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations. Ruto’s arrival was a signal of stability as Kithure Kindiki, the newly nominated deputy president, officially welcomed him at the Kwale Stadium. Kindiki’s nomination follows closely on the heels of Gachagua’s removal from office, marking a swift transition in the country’s leadership.

This year’s Mashujaa Day is themed around affordable housing, a key initiative of the Kenya Kwanza administration. Despite the political upheaval, the government remains focused on its development agenda.
