Fresh Twist as Gov’t Goes After Gachagua’s Workers, Fires 300 of Them via SMS
In a dramatic turn of events, the government has terminated the contracts of 300 staffers who served under former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, delivering the news via SMS.
This decision comes just weeks after Gachagua’s controversial impeachment and removal from office.
Sources disclosed to The Standard that the affected employees, most of whom were hired during Gachagua’s tenure at Harambee Annex and Karen, started receiving the dismissal messages over the weekend.
One of the affected staff members, John Mbuthia, shared his plight: “I received communication from HR that my contract has been terminated.” The terse notifications caught many by surprise, deepening the uncertainty surrounding Gachagua’s allies.
This latest development follows a similar purge last month when 108 staffers associated with the former deputy president were placed on compulsory leave.
Before proceeding on leave, department heads were instructed to name interim officers to oversee operations, signaling the administration’s effort to sever ties with Gachagua’s era.
Gachagua’s impeachment remains a contentious issue. Both houses of parliament overwhelmingly voted in favor of his removal, citing gross constitutional violations.
In the National Assembly, 282 members endorsed the charges, while 54 senators upheld the same, leaving only 13 senators to defend Gachagua.
As Gachagua’s political chapter closes, President William Ruto swiftly filled the vacuum by nominating Kithure Kindiki, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary, as his new deputy president. Kindiki was sworn in on November 1, ushering in a fresh leadership dynamic.
For the dismissed workers, the future remains uncertain. The abrupt termination has sparked debate over the government’s handling of transitions, with critics questioning the ethics of dismissing employees via text messages.
This marks yet another fallout from Gachagua’s ouster, underscoring the ripple effects of political upheavals on public service careers.
