Fred Matiang’i Quits World Bank Job to Challenge President Ruto in 2027 Elections

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has resigned from his role at the World Bank, taking a major step toward launching his 2027 presidential campaign against current President William Ruto.

According to insiders, Dr. Matiang’i submitted his three-month resignation notice in early June, and his contract will officially end in August. His departure from the World Bank signals a strong political comeback that analysts say could shape Kenya’s next general election.

Sources close to his team reveal that Dr. Matiang’i is planning a return to Kenya later this June to reconnect with political allies and prepare for an official campaign launch in August. Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi, who is part of Team Matiang’i, confirmed the news and said the former CS is “coming back to rebuild networks and lay the foundation for his 2027 campaign.”

Building a Strong Opposition Alliance

Once back in the country, Matiang’i is expected to meet key opposition leaders as he positions himself as a strong alternative to President Ruto. He plans to collaborate with other political figures like former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, and PLP’s Martha Karua.

His campaign team is working on forming a broad alliance built on unity, honesty, and development. They will also use regular opinion polls to measure each candidate’s popularity before choosing a final flagbearer for the opposition.

Quiet Support from Uhuru Kenyatta and the Jubilee Party

Sources claim that former President Uhuru Kenyatta is quietly supporting Matiang’i’s presidential bid. Jubilee Party, which backed Raila Odinga in the last election, is reportedly throwing its weight behind Matiang’i. Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni stated that Matiang’i reflects the will of many Kenyans and is the strongest candidate to represent the coalition.

Grassroots Campaigns Underway Across Kenya

Team Matiang’i has already set up campaign structures in over 30 counties to meet the legal requirement of securing at least 25% of the vote in half of Kenya’s 47 counties. Two parties — Jubilee and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) — are actively campaigning for him on the ground.

UPA National Chair Nyambega Gisesa said that community outreach has begun, with recent events held in Kisumu and plans for upcoming meetings in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, and Lamu.

Several grassroots groups such as Women for Matiang’i, Nyanza Youths for Dr Fred Matiang’i, and Team Matiang’i have also joined the campaign.

International Lobbying to Boost His Presidential Bid

In a bold move, Matiang’i’s team has hired international lobbying firm Dickens & Madson, based in Canada, for Sh32.5 million. The firm is tasked with promoting his candidacy among powerful governments like the US, UK, Japan, and Kenya. The agreement, signed in July 2024, outlines efforts to support Matiang’i’s political mission and policy goals through diplomatic and strategic influence.

Challenges Ahead for Matiang’i

Despite his reputation as a results-driven leader, Matiang’i faces tough challenges. Critics highlight his controversial past during his time as Interior CS, including claims of human rights violations and abuse of power. Furthermore, he has never run for any elected office, making his political experience untested in the ballot box.

Still, political analysts believe he has strong potential. Prof. Gitile Naituli of Multimedia University says Matiang’i is one of the few opposition figures with wide public support and could unite regions that might otherwise stay divided.

National Tour to Begin in June

Once his World Bank contract ends, Matiang’i is expected to begin a nationwide tour to listen to Kenyans, gather feedback, and strengthen support. His team has planned several forums involving political leaders, youth groups, professionals, and civil society to boost engagement.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, another key ally, said Matiang’i is building a strong, county-based network and will become a powerful presence across the country after August.
