Former CS Linturi Reveals Mistake He and Gachagua Made in Trusting Ruto, Warns Kindiki
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has opened up about a major oversight that both he and ousted Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua regret – supporting President William Ruto without a formal agreement.
Speaking during a candid event in Meru, Linturi expressed deep regret for trusting Ruto without signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU), a move he believes led to their political downfall.
“Today, I regret that when everybody else was negotiating using a political party and signing agreements, Gachagua and I said no, let us proceed because we believe and trust you (President Ruto),” Linturi confessed, reflecting on their fateful decision. His tone was that of bitterness and disappointment as he described how their trust in Ruto backfired, resulting in their political ouster.
Linturi, who played a key role in rallying support for Ruto in Meru during the 2022 election campaign, revealed that neither he nor Gachagua thought it necessary to secure their positions through formal agreements. Instead, they relied on mutual trust—a move that has since cost them dearly.
“We have worked so hard, and the only thing I regret is we did not negotiate using a political party signing agreements,” Linturi lamented. His dismissal from Ruto’s Cabinet, following nationwide protests against the Finance Bill 2024, has only deepened his regrets. Linturi, like many others, was left without a job after the protests prompted Ruto to sack his entire Cabinet.
“You know I am jobless. I can tell you for free and without any fear that when you are making negotiations, you come out stronger, better, and you are not easily targeted,” he added, offering advice to current and future politicians.
Linturi’s warning extended to incoming Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who is set to be sworn in soon. He urged Kindiki to avoid making the same mistake, advising him to sign an agreement with Ruto before assuming office. “This word truthful has caused a lot of problems in this country, and it has really messed up some of us,” he said.
Linturi also hinted at plans to run for governorship in the next general elections, though he did not specify which party he intends to align with.
