Five Dead, Several Injured in Subukia Trailer Accident
At least five people have been reported dead, with several others suffering severe injuries following a tragic accident along the Nyahururu-Nakuru Highway in Nakuru County’s Subukia area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 3, around 7 pm, when a trailer transporting logs of wood lost control. The trailer struck two pedestrians walking by the roadside before hitting others standing nearby. It then flipped over and ended up in a ditch.
First responders arrived quickly and rushed the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Videos and images circulating online show the trailer severely damaged, with its front completely wrecked and a broken windscreen.
Residents were seen attempting to collect the scattered logs, but they were stopped by police officers, who arrived shortly after to secure the scene. The officers cordoned off the area for investigation purposes and later removed the trailer to reduce traffic congestion.
Local residents expressed their growing concerns about the increase in road accidents in the area, calling on the national government for urgent action to address the safety issues on the highway.
After the incident, Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary for Interior, issued a warning to drivers, urging them to avoid reckless driving and the use of overloaded vehicles, especially during the festive season.
In a statement released on December 4, Omollo ordered traffic police and officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to take immediate action against unlicensed Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) and enforce traffic discipline.
“I direct the National Police Service and NTSA to ensure strict enforcement of traffic regulations for all vehicles, both private and commercial,” Omollo stated.
Road safety records show a worrying rise in fatalities and serious injuries, especially among motorcyclists, passengers, and pedestrians. Between January and November, 4,047 people died in road accidents, compared to 3,726 during the same period last year.
The total number of accidents also increased, with 20,369 recorded this year, up from 19,262 in 2023. Serious injuries reached 10,124, a rise from 9,059 the previous year.
