Fire Wipes Out Over 100 Homes in Nairobi’s Mukuru Kwa Njenga

A devastating fire swept through the Mukuru Kwa Njenga Estate in Nairobi on Monday night, leaving over 100 households in ruins.

The inferno broke out at around 9 p.m. near the Muhindi Mweusi area, forcing displaced residents to seek refuge in nearby estates. The cause of the fire remains unclear, but its impact was swift and severe, engulfing property of unknown value.

The Kenya Red Cross Society was among the first responders to the scene, dispatching a rescue team to aid in the emergency efforts. “A fire incident has occurred at Mukuru Kwa Njenga, near Muhindi Mweusi in Nairobi County. Our team is on the ground, actively engaging in response efforts alongside community-based disaster response teams,” the organization confirmed in a statement.

As the fire raged, residents stood helplessly by, watching their homes and belongings being consumed by flames.

Videos obtained by skynews.co.ke show locals watching from a distance as responders worked tirelessly to rescue trapped individuals and contain the blaze. The Nairobi Disaster Management team, alongside local police, soon arrived to assist in putting out the fire.

The Mukuru Kwa Njenga incident adds to a growing list of fire outbreaks in the country, sparking concerns over fire safety and preparedness in high-density residential areas.

This latest blaze comes just days after another fire at Katoloni Mixed Secondary School in Machakos County, which left two students critically injured and 13 others nursing minor injuries. Preliminary investigations into the school fire suggest arson may have been the cause.

The recurring fires have prompted government officials to take action. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba recently issued a directive for a mandatory inspection of all schools nationwide.

“The inspection will be done to ensure that all schools adhere to the safety protocols outlined in the Safety Standards Manual,” Ogamba stated in a press release.

The cause of the Mukuru Kwa Njenga fire is still under investigation, but the incident has once again highlighted the need for stronger fire prevention measures and faster response times in urban areas prone to such disasters.
