Fake Fertilizer Worth Ksh 2M Seized as Authorities Intensify Anti-Counterfeit Efforts
A significant crackdown in Molo, Nakuru, led to the seizure of 233 bags of counterfeit fertiliser, valued at Ksh2.1 million. Officials from the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) acted swiftly, apprehending those responsible for the fraudulent operation.
These fake products were intended for distribution to farmers across the northern Rift Valley region, posing a serious threat to their livelihoods.
ACA officials have issued a stern warning to farmers, urging them to remain vigilant against deceptive distributors. The use of counterfeit fertiliser can lead to severe damage to crops, resulting in substantial financial losses. Robi Mbugua, an ACA officer, confirmed the arrests and ongoing prosecution under the Anti-Counterfeit Act.
“We managed to seize 233 bags worth Ksh2.1 million of fake fertiliser and arrested two suspects who are currently facing prosecution under the Anti-Counterfeit Act,” he stated. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to fake farm inputs.
This incident follows closely on the heels of Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe’s order to destroy 27,518 bags of expired fertiliser stored at various National Cereals Produce Board (NCPB) warehouses. The government has assured the public that no losses will be incurred, as the supplier will bear the destruction costs. The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is overseeing the safe disposal of the expired fertiliser.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development clarified that the expired consignment, consisting of sulphate of ammonia (21%) fertiliser, was initially deemed compliant by KEBS. However, upon delivery to NCPB, the short shelf life, expiring in late February, was discovered. The supplier was promptly notified and instructed to provide fertiliser with a longer expiration date.
The country has faced numerous challenges related to fake fertiliser in the past, with previous scandals causing significant disruptions in the agricultural sector. This latest seizure highlights the ongoing efforts to combat counterfeit products and protect farmers from exploitation.
