Drama at Mwea as Bees Attack Mourners Halting Burial Ceremony
A burial ceremony at Huduruma Estate, Ngurubani in Mwea turned into a dramatic scene when a swarm of bees attacked the mourners, leaving several injured.
The mourners had gathered to say their final goodbyes to former teacher Faith Njeri Murigu when the bees struck, causing panic among the crowd. Many people fled the area to avoid the stinging swarm.
Ngari Muthang’ato, the master of ceremonies, spoke to Citizen Digital and confirmed the shocking incident. It occurred shortly after the funeral procession returned from a service at ACK St. Luke Wanguru Church. The group was preparing to proceed to the graveside when the bees suddenly attacked.
“Several people, including close family members and clergy, were taken to the hospital. Some of us are still recovering from the stings, and the ceremony had to be stopped,” Muthang’ato explained.
Reverend Irene Gitari, who was also present, described how the group tried to pray together, but the bees kept swarming around them. She had no choice but to run to safety.
Samuel Waweru, a relative of the deceased, expressed his disbelief at the bizarre situation. “We had traveled from Ndia to bury our aunt. This is unbelievable. It’s the first time any of us has witnessed something like this,” he said.
The family later confirmed that the injured had received medical treatment and were discharged. Despite the chaos, the burial was completed late at night with only a few remaining mourners present.
