Drama as Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki Refuses to Read His Own Report in the Senate, Claims He Can’t See
A dramatic scene unfolded in the Senate on Monday, September 9, when Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki refused to read his own report before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC), citing an inability to see properly.
Njuki was summoned to address issues raised by the Auditor General concerning Tharaka Nithi’s financial statements for the fiscal years 2021/2022 and 2022/2023.
The governor’s appearance before CPAC was part of the Senate’s broader mission to ensure accountability and transparency in how county governments handle public funds. However, the proceedings took an unexpected turn when Njuki was asked to read aloud a portion of his report.
After spending a few moments scanning the document, Njuki declared, “Chair, I need a pair of glasses. I didn’t carry one.” His unexpected statement caused an outburst of laughter from the committee members, but the governor was resolute, claiming that the text in the report was simply too small for him to read. “The words are too small, I can’t read this chair. This is not a joke chair,” he reiterated, emphasizing that his predicament was genuine.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna raised concerns about the situation, questioning whether the meeting could proceed given the governor’s visual challenges.
Sifuna expressed surprise, noting that throughout the morning session, he had not seen Njuki struggle with any visual impairment until the moment he was asked to read a section of the county’s financial statements.
“I don’t know if we can give him some tea to drink. Maybe the sugar levels have affected his eyes because this is quite surprising,” Sifuna remarked, adding a humorous tone to the already tense moment.
Despite growing uncertainty among the committee members regarding the governor’s vision, Njuki remained steadfast, asserting that the font size in the document was too small for him to read. The session was left in suspense, as members debated the next course of action.
