DPP says OCS Taalam interfered with CCTV cameras in the Death of Albert Ojwang
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has informed the Milimani Law Courts that Samson Taalam, the Officer in Charge at Nairobi Central Police Station, has meddled with key evidence in the case of Albert Ojwang, who tragically died while in police custody.
The DPP claims that Taalam, who oversees the station’s records and CCTV systems, brought in a technician to manipulate the surveillance footage—an action seen as an attempt to obstruct justice. Prosecutors warn that this interference could seriously undermine the ongoing investigation into Ojwang’s suspicious death.
Taalam’s mobile phone has been taken and is now being examined for any clues related to the case. Authorities suspect that more officers were involved, and some of them still need to provide their statements. The prosecution is worried that Taalam might leverage his position to sway or intimidate these potential witnesses.

To ensure the investigation remains intact, the State is requesting the court to hold Taalam for 21 days. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) needs this time to wrap up its inquiries without any outside interference.
“This short detention is necessary to protect evidence and ensure justice is served,” the prosecution argued in court. They added that Taalam has already been told the reasons for his arrest and the basis of the request for continued detention.
The prosecution claims it has fulfilled all the legal criteria for pre-trial detention, highlighting the tampering of CCTV footage as undeniable evidence of interference.
The court is expected to make a decision on this request shortly. In the meantime, Taalam’s defense team is likely to challenge the application and push for his release.
This case has captured the public’s attention, with many Kenyans calling for justice for Albert Ojwang and demanding accountability from law enforcement.
