Didmus Barasa Speaks on DP Gachagua Impeachment Motion, Explains His Role
In a dramatic political development, the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has gained significant traction, with the pro-Gachagua group announcing that it has secured 242 signatures from members of the National Assembly.
Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, the motion’s primary sponsor, revealed this significant milestone while addressing the media, emphasizing that the motion had met the necessary threshold for advancement.
“So far, I have received 242 signatures, and an additional six MPs were awaiting to append their signatures,” Barasa stated, underscoring the momentum behind the impeachment bid. The motion requires at least 233 signatures from the 349-member house, meaning Barasa’s group has exceeded the minimum requirement, setting the stage for a potential showdown in the National Assembly.
Barasa’s firm stance against Gachagua centers on allegations of gross constitutional violations and misconduct in office. “The deputy president’s actions have raised serious questions about his adherence to the rule of law,” Barasa asserted, insisting that Gachagua’s leadership has been marked by decisions that contradict the values enshrined in the Constitution.
However, not all political factions are on board with the motion. Reports indicate that members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party have shown reluctance to support the impeachment effort, prompting a call for intervention from ODM leader Raila Odinga. “It’s crucial for all leaders to recognize the importance of accountability, especially at the highest levels of government,” Odinga was quoted as saying, highlighting the need for unity in holding leaders responsible for their actions.
Meanwhile, another MP from the Kenya Kwanza coalition claimed that the motion has gathered even more support, with 300 signatures reported. “We have a strong mandate, and we are ready to table this motion in the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 1,” he stated, reflecting the growing confidence among those backing the impeachment.
The impending vote promises to be a pivotal moment in Kenya’s political landscape, as both sides brace for a fierce debate over Gachagua’s future. As the nation watches closely, the implications of this motion extend beyond individual accountability; they represent broader questions about governance, integrity, and the rule of law in Kenya.
As the date approaches, all eyes will be on the National Assembly to see whether the motion will indeed proceed and what the outcomes may mean for the future of the current administration.
