DCI Uncovers Truth Behind Viral State House Break-in Allegations
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed as fake news reports claiming its officers arrested two individuals for allegedly breaking into the Mombasa State House and sleeping on President William Ruto’s bed.
The viral reports, which sparked widespread intrigue online, alleged that two suspects accessed the State House through an open window, aiming to experience the comfort of the president’s bed. The false claims further suggested that the suspects were caught after cooks heard snoring from the presidential quarters and alerted security personnel.
In a statement issued on Sunday, November 17, the DCI categorically denied the allegations, clarifying that the arrests were unrelated to State House security breaches.
“Contrary to some fake news doing rounds in the online space, two suspects were arrested on November 11, 2024, by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) of Central Police Station Mombasa, for the offence of handling suspected stolen properties,” the DCI confirmed.
The investigative agency revealed that the suspects, aged 20 and 29, were apprehended along Digo Road in Mombasa following a tip-off from concerned residents. Acting promptly, law enforcement officers raided the suspects’ residence at the Rio Building, recovering stolen goods worth over Ksh1.2 million.
Among the recovered items were 51 mobile phones, several laptops, and other electronic devices believed to have been stolen. “The suspects are being held as investigations continue to establish the origin of the recovered items and determine the extent of their involvement in criminal activities,” the DCI statement added.
The fabricated news highlighted suspicions about the suspects’ intentions, even as it falsely claimed no damage or theft occurred during the purported break-in. The DCI urged the public to disregard the false reports and to verify information from credible sources.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of misinformation, especially regarding sensitive matters such as State House security. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to addressing crime while ensuring the public is informed accurately.
