CS Muturi Fires Back After Ruto Labels Him Incompetent
President William Ruto ignited a political firestorm by publicly criticizing Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi’s past performance as Attorney General. Ruto claimed Muturi was “fairly incompetent” for failing to establish the Waqf Commission.
Muturi, in a swift and direct response via his X account, refuted the president’s allegations. He clarified that the Waqf Act does not mandate a “Muslim Endowment Fund,” emphasizing that such funds are created by individual Muslims and managed by the commission.
“Under the Waqf Act no.8 of 2022, there’s no provision for a “Muslim Endowment Fund “. It must be understood that a waqf is a religious, charitable, or benevolent endowment by a person who professes Muslim faith and is managed by the Waqf Commission,” Muturi stated.
Ruto’s comments came during an Iftar session with the Muslim community at State House. He assured attendees that his current Attorney General, Dorcas Oduor, would prioritize the commission’s establishment.
“As we move forward, we will continue to look at the issues that have been raised here—issues of education—and find a nexus between religious and formal education to determine what needs to be done,” Ruto explained.
“On Waqf, I agree with you; it has taken too long. There is no reason for the delay, and I had a problem with the AG who was there. He was fairly incompetent, but now I have a very competent lady, and I can assure you the issues of Waqf will be sorted out,” he added.
This public spat adds another layer to the already tense political climate. Muturi has recently been vocal about his concerns regarding the government’s handling of abduction cases, further straining his relationship with the administration.
Despite facing criticism and speculation about his position, Muturi remains defiant. He asserted his commitment to accountability and dismissed any notion of resignation.
“Why would I resign for saying the truth? I must speak the truth; if there is a mistake, I must come out and defend Kenyans,” Muturi declared.
This exchange highlights a significant rift within the government, raising questions about internal cohesion and accountability.
