Chaos in Nairobi: Activist Hanifa Adan Attacked During Protest as Goons Disrupt Peaceful March
Prominent activist Hanifa Adan was left shaken after she was reportedly assaulted during anti-government protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, June 17. The city witnessed growing concerns as organized gangs on motorcycles targeted demonstrators across various parts of the capital.
Hanifa, a well-known critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration and police brutality, was caught up in violent confrontations between officers and protestors. What began as a peaceful procession toward Nairobi Central Police Station quickly turned chaotic when armed goons allegedly hijacked the march.
During a live broadcast from the protest scene, Hanifa claimed that the attackers harassed demonstrators and stole their belongings. She said she became a victim herself when a man reportedly beat her and took her phone.
“One of them hit me and ran off with my phone. I managed to grab his jacket as he kept attacking me. Luckily, others stepped in, caught up with him, and I got my phone back. He was beaten badly,” she explained.
Although she managed to retrieve her phone, Hanifa accused the police of standing by as gangs terrorized peaceful protestors. “Police are just watching while these thugs attack innocent people,” she stated.

By midday, major business operations in the CBD had ground to a halt. Crowds had taken over Moi Avenue, calling for justice for slain blogger Albert Ojwang. The demonstration, which began peacefully, turned violent as suspected hired thugs clashed with demonstrators.
Through her social media updates, Hanifa reported that one of the attackers was apprehended and beaten by protestors. The man needed urgent medical attention after the incident.
In the height of the tension, angry demonstrators set fire to a motorcycle reportedly used by the goons along Moi Avenue. More unrest broke out on Koinange Street, where another bike was also torched, raising fears that the violence could spread further.
Meanwhile, similar protests were held in Mombasa County in solidarity with the Nairobi demonstrators. Although mostly peaceful, police arrested four individuals, including a woman, and took them to Mombasa Central Police Station.
