Bungoma Church Told to Return Ruto’s Ksh5M: “Unclear Sources” – Ole Sapit

The Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Jackson Ole Sapit, has instructed the Bungoma bishop to return a Ksh5 million donation given on behalf of President William Ruto.

Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, December 3, Archbishop Sapit expressed regret over the incident, describing it as an unfortunate attempt to embarrass the Anglican Church. He clarified that the church would not accept donations without transparency about their sources.

“What happened in Bungoma was unfortunate because it seemed like a test to see how the Anglican Church would respond after the recent stand taken by the Catholic Church,” Sapit remarked.

On Sunday, December 1, President Ruto donated Ksh5 million to Crispinus Anglican Church in Bungoma, delivered by Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka. This move reignited public debate over politicians giving large sums to churches. Governor Lusaka defended the donation, urging the church to keep the money.

“There is nothing wrong with leaders donating to support God’s work. I hope the money won’t be returned to me,” Lusaka stated as he handed over the funds.

In a related statement, Archbishop Sapit criticized the culture of praising corrupt politicians. He urged Kenyans to reject such donations, pointing out that much of the money came from misused public funds.

“I encourage all Kenyans to refuse contributions from politicians and their appointees, knowing that most of it is stolen tax money,” Sapit emphasized. “We must stop glorifying leaders who give donations with unclear sources.”

The Anglican leader’s comments come just weeks after the Catholic Church rejected a Ksh5 million donation from President Ruto to a church in Kayole, Nairobi. Catholic Bishop Philip Anyolo had cited constitutional and church guidelines that prohibit fundraising from questionable sources.
