Bunge Towers’ Cracks Spark Outrage as Senator Omtatah Demands Probe
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has expressed concerns over the structural integrity of the newly built multi-billion Bunge Towers, which he claims already shows visible cracks despite its recent completion.
The senator has called for immediate investigations into the quality of materials used during construction.
Speaking during a Senate session on Tuesday, November 19, Omtatah criticized the apparent disparity in the durability of iconic buildings like the Kenya International Conference Centre (KICC) and the recently completed Bunge Towers. The KICC, he noted, has stood the test of time without significant structural flaws, unlike the new tower.
“Bunge Towers is already cracked. So you wonder if it is the quality of cement. Did they bring in substandard cement, or what was it? We need to get this issue answered well and in a timely manner,” Omtatah said, emphasizing the importance of quality assurance in major infrastructure projects.
The senator urged the government to investigate whether substandard cement or other materials were used in the construction, raising concerns about the safety of those who work in or visit the building. He stressed that accountability is critical to safeguarding the public against the dangers of poor construction practices.
“So that going forward,” Omtatah added, “we are sure that when we are going to shop in any part of this country to buy cement, you are buying cement that has been certified to be suitable for modern construction.”
This revelation comes at a time when the construction industry in Kenya faces growing scrutiny over cases of building collapses and the use of substandard materials.
The senator’s remarks are likely to fuel debates on quality control measures and the need for stricter enforcement of building regulations.
As investigations into the matter are anticipated, Kenyans will be watching closely to see if the government acts to ensure transparency and accountability in future construction projects.
