Bishop Ole Sapit Blocks Gachagua and Kalonzo from Speaking During Church Service
Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka, along with other political figures, were taken aback when they were prevented from speaking at a church service.
On Sunday, March 16th, the group, which included former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Governor Johnson Sakaja, attended a service at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Nairobi.
During the service, Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit of the Anglican Church of Kenya prohibited all politicians from addressing the congregation.
Archbishop Ole Sapit announced that a ban was being put in place to stop politicians from making speeches in Anglican churches nationwide.
He clarified that politicians would be recognized, but any speeches would have to take place outside the church building after the service.
“When the time comes to recognize those present, we will do so. But from today forward, in any Anglican congregation, there will be no chance for any political leader to give a speech inside the church. If they wish to address the congregation, it must be done outside the sanctuary. This applies not just today, but in all our dioceses and churches,” Ole Sapit stated.
He further declared that donations from politicians would not be publicly announced, emphasizing that giving to God is a personal matter. “We have already declared, and we reiterate today, that giving in the Anglican Church will not be announced. Simply give as God instructs. What we give to God, we do not need to tell people what we have given Him,” he added.
Makadara MP George Aladwa and Murang’a Senator Joe Nyotu were also among the leaders who were not allowed to speak.
