Arrest Warrant Issued for Key Suspect in Agnes Tirop’s Murder
A judge in Eldoret issued an arrest warrant for Ibrahim Rotich, the main suspect in Agnes Tirop’s murder, after he missed court twice. Justice Robert Wananda also ordered Rotich’s Ksh400,000 bail to be forfeited.
Rotich, Tirop’s former husband and coach, was nowhere to be found. His family and lawyer, Ngingi Mbugua, said they didn’t know where he was. Concerns were raised that he had changed his address without telling anyone.
Mbugua also stated that he couldn’t reach Rotich by phone. Despite this, he had asked the court for one more chance before issuing the warrant.
Agnes Tirop was found dead in her Iten home in October 2021, with stab wounds. Investigations pointed to Rotich as the primary suspect, amidst reports of disputes over her earnings.
Tirop’s death occurred shortly after she returned from the Tokyo Olympics, where she finished fifth in the 5000m race. An autopsy revealed she died from stab wounds to the neck and a blow to the head.
Rotich was arrested after the murder. He was later released on bail in 2023, after his lawyers argued he was not a flight risk.
However, Rotich has now disappeared, prompting Tirop’s father to demand that the Eldoret Police Station’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS) explain the situation.
One of Rotich’s bail conditions was to report to the police station every Monday. Tirop’s father, Vincent Tirop, through his lawyer, requested the court to compel the OCS to produce the attendance records.
Justice Wananda agreed, ordering the Eldoret OCS to appear in court on April 8 to explain Rotich’s compliance with his bail conditions.
