Another Devastating Fire Strikes Mukuru Kwa Njenga
A fire broke out at the Wapewape zone in Mukuru Kwa Njenga on the afternoon of Sunday, December 8. Footage shared by Kenyans.co.ke showed iron sheet houses being consumed by flames as the fire spread quickly through the area.
In a statement, the Mukuru Community Justice Center confirmed that rescue teams had reached the scene. “Happening now at Mukuru Kwa Njenga Wapewape zone. The fire brigade and community volunteers are on site to control the fire,” they said.
Videos also captured local residents running away from the powerful flames, while others attempted to extinguish the fire. At the time of writing, the number of people injured or killed in the incident had not been confirmed.
This disaster occurred only weeks after another deadly fire in Kamukunji’s Majengo area, which claimed six lives and injured 16 people in late November. Mukuru Kwa Njenga has seen several fires in the past, often with tragic results. For example, on the night of September 17, a fire tragically killed three children—siblings aged 16, 8, and 4.7.
Just a month later, on October 17, the nearby Mukuru Kwa Reuben area suffered another fire that destroyed homes and property. Another fire struck Nairobi’s Ngara Market on November 30, destroying millions worth of goods in the market area, which hosts numerous small businesses.
