Embakasi Central Member of Parliament Benjamin Gathiru, a vocal supporter of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has publicly voiced his discontent with National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah.

Gathiru, who is known for his strong allegiance to Gachagua, delivered a scathing rebuke to Ichung’wah on Sunday, accusing him of overstepping his bounds and undermining other leaders within the government.

Speaking to a gathering of his constituents, Gathiru did not hold back, directly addressing President William Ruto, urging him to take control of the situation. “I want to ask the President, it is you who appointed Kimani Ichung’wah as the Majority Leader and not us. You appointed him the leader of government business.

“The people and I need to understand whether the role included going around the country abusing the Deputy President,” Gathiru questioned, his frustration palpable.

The MP likened Ichung’wah’s behavior to that of “an animal on the loose,” emphasizing the need for immediate action. Gathiru expressed his embarrassment at being associated with Ichung’wah, particularly in light of what he described as the Majority Leader’s penchant for “childish talk” and insults.

“I am even feeling ashamed as a leader standing before you with the fact that my Leader of Majority is at the center of children’s talk of how he knows how to abuse others. Which government is this?” Gathiru lamented.

Drawing parallels to the previous administration under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Gathiru warned that Ichung’wah’s conduct could lead to a similar downfall for the current government.

“The other government also started going this route when people started walking away from the government, and even now, I am seeing that this is the trend that is going to follow soon,” he recounted, hinting at a possible exodus of disillusioned leaders.

Gathiru also took the opportunity to criticize the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), accusing them of intimidation tactics. He cited a recent incident where he and Embakasi North MP James Gakuya were interrogated by DCI officers over their alleged involvement in planning the anti-government Gen Z protests.

“Even as I stand here, my phone and that of Gakuya have never been returned. DCI are sitting on them, and they are not using them. It was just a move to make us shiver,” he narrated.

In a final jab, Gathiru addressed the emerging political alliance between President Ruto and the opposition, warning that those who joined the government later must respect those who were there from the beginning.

“It cannot be that we are bringing in the second wife so that we can chase our mother. That cannot happen. The second wife must respect the first wife,” he argued, making it clear that he would not tolerate any attempts to sideline the original supporters of the government.

Kimani Ichung’wah, who has been known for his unapologetic stance and sharp criticism of those perceived as obstacles to President Ruto’s agenda, now finds himself at the center of internal party discord as tensions rise within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
