‘A Tall Order’: Cherargei Warns Omtatah About 2027 Presidential Bid
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has voiced his concerns about Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah’s prospective 2027 presidential bid, highlighting the financial and strategic hurdles involved in running for the nation’s top office.
Cherargei’s remarks, made on Saturday, November 23, via social media, began with an acknowledgment of Omtatah’s bold political ambition. “To my brother and colleague Senator Okiya Omtatah, while I wish you well in your Presidential bid, there are a few things you need to be aware of,” Cherargei stated.
He elaborated on the challenges Omtatah might face, noting that a successful presidential campaign requires immense resources and an expansive grassroots network. “To run a successful presidential campaign, you need a minimum of Ksh7 billion; a voting bloc that’s established; grassroots network that isn’t even aware of social media existence or hype,” Cherargei advised.
The Nandi senator went on to highlight President William Ruto’s victory over Raila Odinga in the 2022 General Election as an example of the complexities of a presidential race. “To vie against H.E William Ruto is a tall order who outwitted and outsmarted the government candidate Raila Odinga in the 2022 General Election,” he added.
Cherargei’s cautionary note comes shortly after Omtatah announced the formation of a 10-member presidential exploratory committee. Omtatah expressed a deep sense of purpose in making the announcement. “We are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, and the call to serve has never been more urgent. I am committed to listening, learning, and building a platform that reflects the values and priorities of our citizens,” Omtatah stated.
The committee, chaired by Mary Kathomi Riungu, includes notable figures such as activist Hanifa Adan, tasked with public relations and media, among others. The team will assess Omtatah’s viability as a candidate while building support for his campaign.
Omtatah, a respected constitutional rights activist known for challenging contentious government policies, has received significant social media backing for his bid. However, Cherargei’s skepticism echoes concerns about the feasibility of unseating an incumbent president like William Ruto.
