Endarasha Academy Survivor Pupil Details How the Deadly Fire Began
A young survivor from Hillside Endarasha Academy has recounted the horrifying moments when a deadly fire claimed the lives of 21 students, turning a night of rest into a nightmare. The dormitory, which housed pupils from Grade 5 to Grade 8, became a trap of flames and smoke, leaving the survivors with chilling memories.
According to the mother of one of the survivors, who spoke to Citizen TV, her son vividly described how the fire began. “He explained that one of the children was startled awake when the bulb exploded, sending sparks onto his mattress, which then caught fire,” she said. The student, who had been sleeping on the top bunk of a double-decker bed near the dormitory entrance, immediately sprang into action, desperately searching for water to douse the flames.
However, with no water readily available, the fire quickly spread across the bed, turning the dormitory into a blazing inferno. The student rushed back to the dormitory to alert his fellow pupils.
Despite their best efforts to extinguish the fire, they found it spreading rapidly, leaving them no choice but to wake more children and alert the matron. “He said they tried to put out the fire, but it was spreading so fast they couldn’t control it. They had no choice but to wake up more children and alert the matron,” the mother recounted.
The fire began near the main entrance of the dormitory, where 48 students were sleeping in 24 double-decker beds. The layout of the room, with wooden beds and cardboard partitions, proved disastrous as the flames quickly engulfed everything in their path. The structural materials of the dormitory only fueled the fire, creating a near-impossible situation for those trying to escape.
Despite the matron’s arrival, the fire had already grown uncontrollable. The students’ only option was to flee, but tragically, not all were able to escape. Thick smoke and fast-moving flames trapped many, leaving them with little chance of survival.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura assured the public that investigations into the fire’s cause are ongoing. “While the cause of the fire has not yet been conclusively identified, the government confirms that it has mobilized all relevant agencies and continues to work diligently to conduct these investigations. Those found responsible will be brought to justice. The government is committed to ensuring accountability for every learner.”
As parents mourn their lost children, they have called on the government to expedite the investigation, with some still searching for their missing loved ones.
