Legal Drama: CJ Koome Slapped with Demand Letter Over Alleged False Information in Appointment
In a dramatic twist to Kenya’s judicial leadership, Chief Justice Martha Koome has been hit with a seven-day ultimatum demanding the correction of alleged inaccuracies in her vetting documents.
The demand was issued by a Kenyan woman claiming to be a founding member of the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Kenya).
According to a letter dated September 3, CJ Koome is accused of misrepresenting her role within FIDA Kenya in her resume submitted during her vetting for the Chief Justice position.
The complainant asserts that Koome falsely claimed to have served as the Federation’s Vice-Chairperson from 1996 to 1998. The woman, who contends that she herself held the Vice-Chair position during that period, describes Koome’s claims as misleading and potentially fraudulent.
“Our client, who is a founder member of FIDA Kenya, participated in the council election of 1996 and was duly elected as the Vice-Chair of the Council,” the demand letter states. “Our client legitimately believes that according to recordings, Chief Justice Martha Koome did not serve as Vice-Chairperson of FIDA Kenya for the period 1996-1998.”
The complainant further alleges that Koome may have conspired with other FIDA Kenya leaders to falsify records to support her claim of having held the Vice-Chair position. The letter warns that if Koome fails to rectify this information within the stipulated seven days, legal action will be pursued.
“We have mandatory instructions to institute legal proceedings in the High Court for orders and to ventilate the interest of our client,” the letter warns. “This is at your risk as to legal costs and other incidentals without any further reference to you whatsoever.”
This demand comes three years after Martha Koome was appointed as Kenya’s first female Chief Justice and sworn into office in May 2021 following a successful vetting process by the National Assembly.
The dispute adds a new layer of controversy to Koome’s high-profile tenure at the helm of Kenya’s judiciary.
