Kabando Denounces Ruto’s ‘Foolish’ Comments on Livestock Vaccination Critics
Former Mukurweini MP, Kabando Wa Kabando, has criticized President William Ruto’s recent comments calling those opposing livestock vaccination “mad” and “possibly stupid.”
In a statement on Wednesday, December 11, Kabando argued that criticizing the president’s unusual remarks was part of civic responsibility, emphasizing that those against the vaccination were patriots with good intentions.
He described Ruto’s comments as unreasonable and urged for a more logical, tolerant, and thoughtful approach to such debates.
“Criticizing the president’s strange behavior is a civic duty. As patriots, we mean well. Calling those against it ‘foolish, mad, stupid, and possessed by evil spirits’ is nonsense that can be cured with logic, reason, and tolerance,” Kabando said.
President Ruto had made these remarks during the closing of the 4th Pastoralist Leadership Summit in Wajir County on December 10. He took aim at leaders opposing the planned nationwide livestock vaccination campaign, suggesting that those who resisted it were being unreasonable and possibly driven by an evil spirit.
“Anyone opposing vaccination to eliminate FMD and PPR is mad, unreasonable, and possibly stupid. How else can you explain it?” Ruto said. He also claimed that some leaders spread false information and oppose every initiative simply for the sake of opposition.
The national livestock vaccination campaign aims to vaccinate 22 million cattle against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and 50 million sheep and goats against Peste des petits ruminants (PPR).
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Andrew Karanja spoke in support of the vaccination on December 4, 2024, emphasizing the importance of protecting the livestock industry, which has the potential to drive economic growth and create jobs.
