Cs Kipchumba Murkomen Heckled Offstage at Korom Festival Amid Public Discontent
On the night of December 7, 2024, Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen faced boos and jeers while attending the Korom Festival in Eldoret. The festival, which celebrates art, music, and culture, featured South African artist Pamela Nkutha as the headliner.
The event was going smoothly until Murkomen was invited to the stage to address the crowd. The mood quickly soured as the audience began to boo loudly, drowning out his speech.
Despite his efforts, the heckling grew louder, forcing Murkomen to cut his address short.
As the booing intensified, Murkomen had no choice but to leave the stage, avoiding further embarrassment while the crowd continued to shout and chant against him.
A video shared by online captured the scene, showing the angry crowd raising their hands in protest. The heckling is seen as part of a growing trend where members of the public have increasingly used such methods to express their discontent with the Kenya Kwanza government, of which Murkomen is a close ally to President William Ruto.
This is not the first instance of public heckling against government officials. On November 23, Moses Kuria, President Ruto’s Senior Economic Advisor, was also booed and kicked out of a funeral in Murang’a. Kuria was confronted by an angry crowd at the service of Mark Gicheru, a Member of the County Assembly (MCA), in what appeared to be a backlash following the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In another incident on October 11, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika and other UDA officials were met with hostility at a funeral in Bahati when they attempted to promote President Ruto’s agenda. When Governor Kihika read a message from Ruto, the crowd reacted angrily, with jeers drowning out her voice.
Similarly, during the 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations in Juja, the reading of President Ruto’s speech also sparked outrage, with the audience openly jeering as the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) read the president’s message.
This wave of public heckling highlights growing dissatisfaction with the direction of the country’s leadership, particularly after the impeachment of Deputy President Gachagua.
