Gachagua Applauds Ruto’s Commitment to Catholic Bishops’ Concerns
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua offered rare praise to President William Ruto for acknowledging and addressing concerns raised by Catholic bishops.
Speaking at PCEA Kerarapon Church in Kajiado County on Sunday, November 17, Gachagua highlighted the importance of the Head of State’s commitment to listening to spiritual leaders.
“I am happy that yesterday President William Ruto acknowledged that the Catholic bishops had raised some issues and he committed to listen to them for them to be addressed. That is the way to go,” Gachagua stated.
His comments followed criticism from some leaders who dismissed the concerns raised by the Catholic Church. Gachagua expressed disappointment over what he termed as unwarranted attacks on the clerics.
“When our spiritual fathers speak, they don’t just speak in vain. I don’t think over 30 bishops can meet and do a statement from nowhere. If there are people who know what the ground is saying, it is our church leaders,” he said.
Gachagua condemned the disrespect shown by some politicians, singling out the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, whom he accused of lecturing the bishops.
“I saw the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly lecturing Catholic bishops like children. I want to tell you leaders to stop being arrogant. Those of us who have been around for a while know how the politics of this country go,” he added.
The comments come after President Ruto, speaking in Embu County a day earlier, promised to address the bishops’ concerns, particularly on healthcare.
“We will ensure no more challenges in accessing healthcare. We will make all the corrections because universal health coverage is a must-do. It will make a difference and ensure no citizen is left behind,” Ruto affirmed.
Gachagua’s remarks underscore the delicate balance between political leadership and engagement with religious institutions, which often serve as the voice of the people.
