“Desist, Refrain”: ODM MPs Warn Gachagua Allies for Linking Raila to Ouster Plot
A faction of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmakers has issued a stern warning to allies of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, particularly from the Mt. Kenya region, against linking Raila Odinga to the ongoing impeachment discussions.
The warning comes amid heightened political tensions as Gachagua faces an impeachment motion in Parliament.
Speaking at a public gathering in Homa Bay County, National Assembly Minority Whip Millie Odhiambo, along with other ODM MPs, fiercely criticized the narrative pushed by Gachagua’s allies, who have accused Raila of orchestrating the ouster plot.
According to Odhiambo, the targeting of Raila Odinga in the political battle has drawn the ire of Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition MPs, compelling them to consider joining the impeachment cause.
“Gachagua told us not to touch the mountain, and we listened. He has now touched Raila, and we are going to touch the mountain,” Millie Odhiambo stated. “I heard MP Wamaua accusing Raila of being the reason for the impeachment. I had not signed the impeachment petition, but after they attacked Raila, I looked for the petition and signed it.”
The Suba North MP stressed that Raila and the ODM party are not part of the internal struggles within the Kenya Kwanza government, adding that their focus remains on supporting the former prime minister’s bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship. She questioned why Raila’s name was being dragged into Gachagua’s political woes, asserting that ODM had no interest in the impeachment motion until Raila was mentioned.
“We don’t know anything about them. So why do you want to get us into a war that is not ours? And I want to encourage you to refrain, desist, and depart from attacking Raila Odinga,” Odhiambo emphasized. “If they want us to retreat, let them come out and publicly apologize for attacking Raila. You cannot attack Raila, who has done nothing.”
She concluded by reiterating that Raila should be left out of the political turmoil surrounding Gachagua’s impeachment, saying, “So please, leave Raila Odinga out of this issue. Leave us out of this issue. It’s not our business.”
