6 Killed, 16 Injured as Fire Engulfs Majengo Area in Kamukunji
A devastating fire outbreak on Tuesday night claimed six lives and left 16 others injured in the Majengo area of Kamukunji, Nairobi.
The blaze, which erupted at around 8:30 pm, reduced approximately 50 houses to ashes, leaving numerous families homeless. Residents scrambled to salvage belongings and sought refuge in nearby estates as firefighters battled the inferno.
The Kenya Red Cross Society, confirming the tragic incident, revealed that it had dispatched rescue teams to aid those affected and support the firefighting efforts. “Around 50 households were affected and sixteen people sustained minor injuries, all treated by Kenya Red Cross.
The Kenya Red Cross remains on-site, supporting efforts to locate missing persons,” read a statement from the organization.
Together with the Nairobi County Disaster Management team, the Kenya Red Cross and community members managed to extinguish the fire. Despite their efforts, several individuals remain unaccounted for as a multi-agency team works to find the missing.
Photos and videos shared online show the magnitude of the destruction. Residents were seen attempting to recover personal belongings as flames consumed property worth millions.
Eyewitnesses described the chaos and despair that unfolded, with one stating, “We were caught off guard. People ran in all directions, trying to escape or save what they could.”

The cause of the fire remains unknown as investigations by the police are underway. This tragedy is the latest in a string of fire incidents in Nairobi. Just a day earlier, another fire in Mathare’s Mlango Kubwa Estate destroyed at least 50 households.
Speaking on the recurring nature of such incidents, a Kenya Red Cross official remarked, “It is disheartening to see so many families displaced within days. We urge the community to observe safety measures and authorities to address this growing problem.”
As the residents of Majengo grapple with the aftermath of the tragedy, humanitarian efforts continue to provide temporary shelter, medical aid, and psychological support to those affected.
