14-Year-Old Girl Injured in June 17 Protests Dies
Hanifa Adan has shared the heartbreaking news that a 14-year-old girl, who was injured during the protest on June 25, has sadly passed away in the hospital while receiving treatment.
In her post on social media on Tuesday, July 1, she mentioned that the girl had been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Our Lady of Mercy before her untimely death.
“Unfortunately, a 14-year-old girl who was at Our Lady of Mercy and injured during the protest succumbed in the ICU and passed on,” her post reads.
Hanifa made this statement after visiting the individuals who were injured during the protests and later admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on June 17.
She mentioned that most of the patients with gunshot wounds have been discharged, with only a few still in care, and noted that one patient is set to be released on July 2.
“Doing my rounds at KNH, and most gunshot patients have been discharged; very few are left. Even Mike Kamau, who was in a very bad state when he came in with six bullets, is doing well and will be discharged tomorrow,” Hanifa said.

On June 18, KHN CEO William Sigilai shared that they had admEitted 16 patients who were currently receiving treatment. This came in the wake of the protests on June 17, which erupted following the tragic death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
“In total, we received 16 casualties in our accident and emergency centre yesterday from the protests. The injuries that were described ranged from gunshot wounds to blunt trauma,” he stated.
Out of the 16 patients, seven were admitted for further treatment, while nine were treated and sent home.
One of the patients who was shot and taken to KNH, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, a vendor, sadly passed away on June 30, 2025.
Mwangi’s father, Jonah Kariuki, shared with the press that they were struggling financially after Mwangi spent over two weeks in the ICU.
“All I can say is that we have a tough task ahead, as getting him out of there (the mortuary) is hard because we do not have money. We are seeking help from Kenyans,” Jonah Kariuki, his father, stated.
